What Is a Classic Car Appraisal?

A classic car appraisal is a certified written document that establishes the market value of a collector or vintage vehicle. Unlike a dealer quote or an online price guide estimate, a certified appraisal is signed by a qualified appraiser, supported by comparable sales data, and commonly accepted by insurers, lenders, and courts.

The appraisal documents the vehicle's year, make, model, VIN, mileage, condition, and any modifications or restoration work — then establishes a defensible market value based on actual comparable sales. That value is what your insurer writes into an agreed value policy, what your bank uses as loan collateral, and what an estate attorney submits to probate court.

A price guide number or a forum opinion is not a certified appraisal. If your insurer, lender, or attorney is asking for documentation, they need the real thing — a signed report from a certified appraiser.

What Classic Car Appraisals Are Used For

A certified appraisal is the document that makes every one of these transactions work. Without it, you're guessing — and guessing wrong is expensive.

Insurance agreed value

Lock in the number your insurer will pay in the event of a total loss. Our clients have submitted reports to Hagerty, State Farm, Farm Bureau, American Collectors, Grundy, and other leading collector carriers.

Bank loan & refinance

Lenders need a certified value before they write a loan against a classic vehicle. Our same-day appraisal keeps the deal moving instead of sitting on a desk waiting for an inspector.

Estate & probate

Our reports are structured to meet the documentation standards probate courts expect. Effective date locked to the date of death; intended user named in the document.

Resale & private sale

A certified appraisal gives buyers confidence and gives sellers a defensible asking price. We also offer free GarageToGarage.com listing for vehicles appraised for resale.

Donation & charitable giving

The IRS requires a qualified appraisal for donated vehicles valued over $5,000. Our reports are prepared to support IRS substantiation requirements for non-cash gifts. We don't represent IRS acceptance — confirm details with your tax advisor.

Legal & divorce proceedings

Our reports are structured for mediation and court use. Acceptance is at the court's discretion. Effective date locked to the separation date or court-ordered valuation date.

Classic Car Appraisal FAQ

How much does a classic car appraisal cost?

Our online certified appraisal starts at $149 with same-day delivery. In-person appraisals are priced by market and vehicle type — call or email for a quote. For high-value collections, estate work, or legal matters, we'll discuss the scope and price before you commit.

What vehicles do you appraise?

Classic American muscle cars, vintage trucks, European sports cars, exotics, customs, restomods, motorcycles, and collector vehicles of all types. We've appraised everything from a 1937 Ford hot rod to a 2006 Porsche 911 GT3. If it has collector value, we can appraise it.

Is an online appraisal as valid as an in-person one?

For most purposes — insurance, bank loans, resale, estate — yes. Our online appraisals are certified and signed. Clients have submitted them to the same insurers and lenders as in-person work. In-person appraisals are appropriate for very high-value vehicles, legal disputes where physical inspection is required, or situations where the owner prefers it.

How many photos do I need to submit?

We accept up to 12 photos per submission. Cover all four exterior angles, the engine bay, interior, undercarriage if accessible, and any notable condition issues or modifications. More detail gives us more to work with and produces a stronger report.

Do you appraise vehicles outside the United States?

We primarily serve the United States and have inspectors in all 50 states and Guam. We have completed appraisals for vehicles in other countries on a case-by-case basis — contact us to discuss.
