Camaro Appraisal FAQ

Question 1

How much does a Camaro appraisal cost?

Accepted Answer

Online Camaro appraisals start at $149. We complete them remotely using your photos and documentation. In-person appraisals are available by quote. We serve all 50 states.

Question 2

What years and models of Camaro do you appraise?

Accepted Answer

We appraise all Camaro generations — first-gen (1967–1969), second-gen (1970–1981), third-gen F-body (1982–1992), fourth-gen (1993–2002), fifth-gen (2010–2015), and sixth-gen (2016–2024). First-gen cars — especially 1969 Z/28, SS, COPO, and ZL1 models — command the highest collector premiums.

Question 3

What makes a Camaro more valuable for insurance?

Accepted Answer

Matching-numbers drivetrain, original paint (especially rare codes like Fathom Green or Hugger Orange), factory high-performance options (Z/28, SS, RS, COPO), documented build sheet or Protect-O-Plate, low mileage, and professional restoration quality all significantly affect insured value.

Question 4

Do I need an appraisal for Camaro agreed-value insurance?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Specialty insurers require a certified appraisal to set the agreed value. Without one, a total-loss claim may be settled at depreciated actual cash value — far below what a collectible Camaro is worth on the market.

Question 5

Can you appraise a COPO Camaro?

Accepted Answer

Yes. COPO Camaros (Central Office Production Order) are among the most valuable first-gen Camaros. We verify COPO documentation, engine codes, and production records to support the premium value these cars command.

Question 6

What is a Camaro Protect-O-Plate and does it matter for appraisal?

Accepted Answer

The Protect-O-Plate is the original GM warranty card that documents the factory engine, transmission, and options. Its presence confirms matching-numbers status and can meaningfully increase appraised value, particularly on high-performance models.

Question 7

Can you appraise a Camaro for a bank loan?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Lenders financing collectible Camaros often require a certified appraisal to establish collateral value. Our reports are accepted by banks, credit unions, and specialty lenders nationwide.

Question 8

How do I get a Camaro appraisal for an estate or probate?

Accepted Answer

We provide appraisals prepared in substantial conformity with USPAP that are accepted by probate courts, estate attorneys, and the IRS for estate tax purposes. Our reports document fair market value as of the date of death or transfer.

Question 9

Will my Camaro appraisal be accepted by Hagerty?

Accepted Answer

Yes. American Classic Appraisals is on Hagerty's approved appraiser list. Our reports are also accepted by Grundy, American Collectors, Heacock Classic, and most other specialty insurers.

Question 10

What photos do I need for an online Camaro appraisal?

Accepted Answer

We need clear photos of all four exterior sides, engine bay (with VIN tag and cowl tag visible), interior, trunk, undercarriage, and any documentation — title, build sheet, Protect-O-Plate, service records, and prior appraisals.

Question 11

What is a Yenko or Baldwin-Motion Camaro and how does it affect value?

Accepted Answer

Yenko Chevrolet and Baldwin-Motion Performance were dealer-level conversion shops that installed L72 427 and other high-performance engines in Camaros during 1967–1969. These cars were not factory COPO vehicles but carry significant collector premiums when properly documented. We verify Yenko and Baldwin-Motion documentation — including the Yenko SYC sticker, dealer invoices, and engine stampings — and account for the premium these cars command over standard SS or Z/28 models.

Question 12

What is the cowl tag and why is it important for a Camaro appraisal?

Accepted Answer

The cowl tag (also called the trim tag or Fisher Body tag) is riveted to the firewall and documents the car's original paint code, trim, and build date. It is one of the primary tools for verifying that a Camaro's color and interior are factory-correct. A missing or damaged cowl tag raises questions about the car's history and can reduce appraised value. We photograph and document the cowl tag in every Camaro appraisal.

Question 13

How do I know if my Camaro is a real Z/28 or SS?

Accepted Answer

Verification requires cross-referencing the VIN (which encodes the body style and engine), the partial VIN stamped on the engine pad, the cowl tag, and the Protect-O-Plate. A real Z/28 will have the DZ 302 engine code stamped on the pad matching the VIN. An SS will show the appropriate engine code and RPO documentation. We perform this verification as part of every appraisal on first-gen Camaros.

Question 14

Do you appraise fifth-gen and sixth-gen Camaros?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The fifth-gen (2010–2015) and sixth-gen (2016–2024) Camaros have developed collector interest, particularly the ZL1, Z/28, and 1LE variants. Low-mileage, unmodified examples are increasingly sought after. We appraise all modern Camaro variants using current market comparables.

Question 15

Can a Camaro appraisal help me dispute an insurance claim?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If your insurer has underpaid a total-loss or damage claim on your Camaro, a certified appraisal is the foundation for invoking the appraisal clause in your policy. We serve as independent appraiser in disputes across all 50 states and have documented results improving settlements on collectible muscle cars.
