Mustang Appraisal FAQ

Question 1

How much does a Mustang appraisal cost?

Accepted Answer

Online Mustang appraisals start at $149. We complete them remotely using your photos and documentation. In-person appraisals are available by quote. We serve all 50 states.

Question 2

What years and models of Mustang do you appraise?

Accepted Answer

We appraise all Mustang generations — 1964½–1973 classic Mustangs (including Shelby GT350, GT500, Boss 302, Boss 429, Mach 1), Fox Body (1979–1993), SN95/New Edge (1994–2004), S197 (2005–2014), S550 (2015–2023), and S650 (2024+). Each era has distinct collector value factors.

Question 3

What makes a Mustang more valuable for insurance?

Accepted Answer

Matching-numbers engine and transmission, original paint (especially rare colors like Wimbledon White or Candy Apple Red), factory high-performance options (K-code, J-code, R-code), Shelby or Boss designation, documented Marti Report, low mileage, and documented restoration history all significantly increase insured value.

Question 4

Do I need an appraisal for Mustang agreed-value insurance?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Specialty insurers like Hagerty, Grundy, and American Collectors require a certified appraisal to set the agreed value on your policy. Without it, you risk being paid only depreciated actual cash value after a total loss — far below what a collectible Mustang is worth.

Question 5

Can you appraise a Mustang for a bank loan or financing?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Lenders financing classic Mustangs often require a certified appraisal to establish collateral value. Our reports are accepted by banks, credit unions, and specialty lenders nationwide.

Question 6

What is a Marti Report and does it affect appraisal value?

Accepted Answer

A Marti Report is a factory production record for 1967–2012 Mustangs, issued by Marti Auto Works from Ford's original build data. It confirms factory options, colors, and production numbers. A Marti Report documenting rare options or low production numbers can meaningfully increase appraised value.

Question 7

Can you appraise a Shelby Mustang?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We appraise all Shelby variants — GT350, GT500, GT350H, and continuation Shelbys. Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) documentation and Shelby registry verification are factored into our value analysis.

Question 8

How do I get a Mustang appraisal for an estate or divorce?

Accepted Answer

Contact us to start an online appraisal. We provide appraisals prepared in substantial conformity with USPAP that are accepted by probate courts, estate attorneys, and family law attorneys for equitable distribution. We can also provide a declaration or expert testimony if the matter goes to litigation.

Question 9

Will my Mustang appraisal be accepted by Hagerty?

Accepted Answer

Yes. American Classic Appraisals is on Hagerty's approved appraiser list. Our reports are also accepted by Grundy, American Collectors, Heacock Classic, and other specialty insurers.

Question 10

What photos do I need for an online Mustang appraisal?

Accepted Answer

We need clear photos of all four exterior sides, engine bay (with VIN tag visible), interior (dash, seats, carpet), trunk, undercarriage, door jambs, and any documentation — title, Marti Report, build sheet, service records, and prior appraisals.

Question 11

What is a Boss 429 Mustang and why is it so valuable?

Accepted Answer

The Boss 429 (1969–1970) was built to homologate Ford's 429 cubic-inch NASCAR engine for street use. Only 1,359 were built in 1969 and 499 in 1970. The engine required significant front-end modifications, making these cars immediately identifiable. Documented, numbers-matching Boss 429s are among the most valuable first-generation Mustangs — a correct example in excellent condition regularly brings six figures. We verify Boss 429 documentation including the Kar Kraft build tag and engine stampings.

Question 12

How does MCA judging affect Mustang appraisal value?

Accepted Answer

The Mustang Club of America (MCA) judges Mustangs on a 1,000-point scale for factory correctness. A Gold or Platinum award documents that a car meets strict originality standards and is recognized by specialty insurers. We reference MCA award documentation in our reports and factor judging results into the value analysis.

Question 13

What is a high-option or 'loaded' Mustang and how does it affect value?

Accepted Answer

Factory options like the 4-speed close-ratio transmission, power front disc brakes, air conditioning, fold-down rear seat, and pony interior package all add documented value. A Mustang with a rare combination of factory options — confirmed by the Marti Report or door data plate — can command a significant premium over a base-spec car of the same year and body style.

Question 14

Can you appraise a Mach 1 or fastback Mustang?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The fastback body style and Mach 1 designation (1969–1973) are among the most desirable first-generation Mustangs. We appraise all body styles — coupe, fastback, and convertible — and account for the body-style premium in our value analysis. The 1969–1970 Mach 1 with the 428 Cobra Jet or Super Cobra Jet engine represents the top of the Mach 1 market.

Question 15

Do you appraise Fox Body Mustangs?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Fox Body (1979–1993) has developed a strong collector following, particularly the 1987–1993 5.0 LX and GT, the 1993 Cobra, and the 1993 Cobra R. Low-mileage, unmodified Fox Bodies are increasingly sought after. We appraise all Fox Body variants and account for the growing collector premium on original, unmolested examples.
