Porsche Appraisal FAQ

Question 1

How much does a Porsche appraisal cost?

Accepted Answer

Online Porsche appraisals start at $149. We complete them remotely using your photos and documentation. In-person appraisals are available by quote. We serve all 50 states.

Question 2

What Porsche models do you appraise?

Accepted Answer

We appraise all collectible Porsche models — 356 (A/B/C/Speedster), 911 (all generations including air-cooled 1964–1998, 996, 997, 991, 992), 912, 914, 924, 928, 944, 968, Boxster, Cayman, and Carrera GT. Air-cooled 911s and 356 Speedsters command the highest collector premiums.

Question 3

What makes a Porsche more valuable for insurance?

Accepted Answer

Matching-numbers engine and gearbox, original paint (especially rare Sonderfarben special-order colors), factory options (Fuchs wheels, limited-slip differential, sport seats), low mileage, documented service history, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and unrestored original condition all significantly affect insured value.

Question 4

Do I need an appraisal for Porsche agreed-value insurance?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Specialty insurers require a certified appraisal to set the agreed value on your policy. Air-cooled 911s and 356s in particular have appreciated dramatically — without a current appraisal, your insured value may be far below actual market value.

Question 5

Can you appraise a Porsche 911 RS or Carrera RS?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We appraise all RS variants — 1973 Carrera RS 2.7, 1974 RS 3.0, 964 RS, 993 RS, 996 GT3 RS, and later RS models. These are among the most valuable air-cooled Porsches and require careful documentation of matching numbers and RS-specific features.

Question 6

What is a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and does it affect appraisal value?

Accepted Answer

A Porsche Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) is an official factory document confirming the car's original specifications, options, and delivery details. It is particularly important for rare or special-order cars and can meaningfully support a higher appraised value.

Question 7

Can you appraise a Porsche for a bank loan or financing?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Lenders financing collectible Porsches often require a certified appraisal to establish collateral value. Our reports are accepted by banks, credit unions, and specialty lenders nationwide.

Question 8

How do I get a Porsche appraisal for an estate or probate?

Accepted Answer

We provide appraisals prepared in substantial conformity with USPAP that are accepted by probate courts, estate attorneys, and the IRS for estate tax purposes. Our reports document fair market value as of the date of death or transfer.

Question 9

Will my Porsche appraisal be accepted by Hagerty?

Accepted Answer

Yes. American Classic Appraisals is on Hagerty's approved appraiser list. Our reports are also accepted by Grundy, American Collectors, Heacock Classic, and most other specialty insurers.

Question 10

What photos do I need for an online Porsche appraisal?

Accepted Answer

We need clear photos of all four exterior sides, engine bay (with engine number visible), interior, frunk, undercarriage, door jambs, and any documentation — title, service records, CoA, prior appraisals, and Porsche Club of America (PCA) concours records if applicable.

Question 11

What is a Porsche Kardex and why does it matter for an appraisal?

Accepted Answer

The Porsche Kardex is the factory production record maintained by Porsche AG in Stuttgart. It documents the car's original paint code, interior, options, and delivery destination. For air-cooled 911s and 356s, a Kardex confirming rare Sonderfarben (special-order) colors or unusual factory options can significantly support a higher appraised value. We reference Kardex documentation in our reports when provided.

Question 12

What is a 'numbers-matching' Porsche and how is it verified?

Accepted Answer

A numbers-matching Porsche has its original engine and gearbox installed — confirmed by the engine case number matching the factory record and the gearbox number matching the CoA or Kardex. For air-cooled 911s, the engine lid script, engine case stampings, and gearbox tag are all cross-referenced. A numbers-matching car commands a substantial premium over a car with a replacement engine, even if the replacement is correct for the model.

Question 13

How do Sonderfarben (special-order) colors affect Porsche value?

Accepted Answer

Sonderfarben are factory special-order paint colors outside the standard palette, ordered at extra cost. Colors like Viper Green, Rubystone Red, and Viola Metallic are rare and highly sought after. A Sonderfarben car with CoA or Kardex documentation confirming the original color can command a 20–40% premium over the same car in a standard color. We document paint codes and cross-reference factory records in our appraisals.

Question 14

Can you appraise a Porsche 356 Speedster or Carrera?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The 356 Speedster (1954–1958) is among the most valuable postwar sports cars, with correct examples regularly bringing $200,000–$500,000+. The 356 Carrera with the four-cam engine is even rarer. We appraise all 356 variants — A, B, C, Speedster, Roadster, and Carrera — and account for the significant value differences between body styles, engine types, and documentation quality.

Question 15

What is PCA concours judging and does it affect Porsche appraisal value?

Accepted Answer

The Porsche Club of America (PCA) runs a national concours judging program that evaluates Porsches on factory correctness and presentation. A PCA concours award documents that a car has been evaluated by knowledgeable judges and meets high standards of authenticity. We reference PCA concours results in our reports and factor award level into the value analysis for cars where documentation is provided.
